Girl Scouts of Connecticut
Self-improvement, safety and some serious fun.

Girls face a lot of issues and challenges as they move from childhood through adolescence. Our programs are designed to help them cope in healthy ways. We also provide inspiring programs for reaching worthy goals, such as literacy, a science career or saving money for school.

Here are some of our most popular programs. Click on any title to get the facts.

Healthy Living

Is self-esteem or a poor body image an issue for your girl, aged 8 to14? Programs such as Uniquely Me! can help. We cover the gamut of hot buttons for adolescents—peer pressure, hygiene, exercise, healthy eating, drugs, alcohol, tobacco abuse and prevention.

Girl Safety

Our Staying Safe for Girls program is designed to help girls stay out of harm's way in any situation. It includes PAVE, which teaches girls activities to help prevent bullying in their neighborhoods and sexual predation on the Internet; Girlz RULE, an anti-bullying and conflict resolution program; and RETRY, a dating violence prevention curriculum.

Expanding Education

Our College Pathways program gets girls aged 11 to 17 geared up for college or trade school by providing support in essay writing, interviewing, career exploration, financial planning and preparation for college life workshops. RU Ready 4 College, another program, offers Kaplan SAT courses and college bus tours.

Reaching Out

Girl Scouts Beyond Bars is a unique program that helps incarcerated mothers and their daughters develop skills they need to deal with issues that arise once mom is released from prison. Girl Scouting in Detention Centers helps incarcerated girls cultivate positive values and a stronger social conscience through a variety of activities.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

We offer several programs that encourage girls of every age to step away from stereotypes and start exploring science, technology, engineering and mathematic subjects with confidence.

Financial Literacy

To help girls aged 8 to 14 take charge of their financial future, we offer Centsability, a program that develops important skills in money management, investing and entrepreneurship. Girls can trade make-believe stocks and travel to New York for a tour of an NYSE trading floor in our Girls Guide to the Financial Good Life program. Another activity, The Penny Project, combines financial know-how with environmental responsibility.

Leadership

Girl Scouts are encouraged to plan projects that benefit their community—and are rewarded for their leadership efforts through our bronze, silver and gold awards, the highest achievements in Girl Scouting. Girls in Government trains girls to make their voices heard through the democratic process. Other leadership opportunities include Crisis Intervention Training, Program Aides, and more.

Literacy

By literacy, we don't just mean reading, but also writing, communicating effectively and processing ideas. All have a huge impact on a girl's success. To help families as well as girls (aged 5 to 11) increase literacy skills, Girl Scouts designed Follow the Reader: A Girl Scout Family Reading Project. Phonics, vocabulary and comprehension are all part of the fun.

Outdoor/Environmental Education

Raising girls' awareness of their stewardship responsibilities toward the environment is a key goal in Girl Scouting. Camp is just one way we do this. Other hands-on field experiences include From Sidewalks to Treetops/Del Suelo al Cielo, which explores nature in any setting, including urban neighborhoods. There are many other unique programs, including a Connecticut River Education Project, which immerses girls in the wisdom of Connecticut watershed protection.
